Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition
Middle School Mathematics Specialist Task Force

In March 2008, the Virginia Mathematics & Science Coalition formed the Middle School Mathematics Specialists Task Force and charged it with the following tasks:

  • Define the role and responsibilities of Middle School Mathematics Specialists
  • Identify the knowledge and competencies needed for a Middle School Mathematics Specialist to be successful.
  • Describe what the preparation of Middle School Mathematics Specialist should involve, including work with principals, supervisors and other instructional staff.
  • Explain how the role of a Middle School Mathematics Specialist can compliment and enhance the organizational structure of a school and a school division.
  • Describe ways to sustain a successful Middle School Mathematics Specialist program.

The preliminary report of the Taskforce was completed in April 2009. The Taskforce is making the preliminary report and the reports of its subcommittees available to the public through the Coalition home page. The Taskforce would appreciate any comments or suggestions from any member of the mathematics education or the broader education communities. The names of theTaskforce members are included in the preliminary report.
