VIRGINIA MATH AND SCIENCE COALITION HONORS BEDFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS RICHMOND,Va. - The Bedford County School Division was honored by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition for its lead teacher program "Our Math Works." Elizabeth Williams, Boonsboro Elementary, received a trophy and a $300 honorarium at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. Under Ms. Williams' leadership, "Our Math Works" has provided intensive training in mathematics and mathematics pedagogy to teachers and administrators in Bedford County since 1999. Funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation, the project has grown from one elementary school in its first year to 15 elementary and three middle schools in the division. "Our Math Works" has become a model for other math lead teacher programs in Virginia. Senator John Watkins, 10th District and board chair of the Coalition, presented the award. Our goal is identify effective programs in hopes that other educators throughout Virginia will seek to emulate these ideas that are proven successful," said Sen. Watkins. Washington High School in Norfolk was honored by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition for its mathematics program designed to raise student and teacher expectations. Debbie Booker, Mathematics Department Chair, and Cassandra Goodwyn, assistant principal, received a trophy and $300 honorarium at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. This program, organized and implemented by Ms. Booker and Ms. Goodwyn, raised parents, students and teachers' expectations and offered effective learning strategies. In just one year since the project's implementation, math SOL test scores have risen from 44% in 2001, to 73% in 2002. VIRGINIA MATH AND SCIENCE COALITION HONORS ROCKY RUN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RICHMOND,Va. - Rocky Run Elementary School in Stafford was honored by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition for its "Building a Community of Thinkers" program. Ms. Debra Delozier received a trophy and a $300 honorarium at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. Ms. Delozier strives to create a classroom climate and culture that supports, honors and respects all children. Using what she learned while pursuing her Masters in Mathematics Education Leadership, Ms. Delozier uses teaching models that are well-grounded in cognitive learning. Recognizing the importance of parental support, she has developed math toolkits that students take home to reinforce learning. This past spring, 65% of Ms. Delozier's students passed the math SOL's. PAUL HIGH SCHOOL RICHMOND,Va. - St. Paul High School in Wise County was honored by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition for its "Estonoa Wetlands Learning Center" program. Ms. Terry Vencil received a trophy and a $300 honorarium at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. Ms. Vencil and her "Team Estonoa" students have been working to improve the wetlands environment and educate the community - while they are studying biology, chemistry, physics and ecology. Ms. Vencil has taken abstract concepts from the textbook into a natural environment. Students are inventorying biological diversity of the wetlands, monitoring water quality, and observing and recording seasonal changes. VIRGINIA MATH AND SCIENCE COALITION HONORS ELMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER RICHMOND,Va. - JoAnne Terrell, Elmont Elementary School teacher in Hanover County was honored by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition for its "Count on Us" program. JoAnne Terrell, SOL instructional assistant, and Karen Carpenter, principal, received a trophy and a $300 honorarium at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. Ms. Terrell designed "Count on Us" to serve as a partnership among parents, teachers and students to improve students' understanding of math. The program began in 1999, targeting students in kindergarten through third grade. The program has been expanded to include k-5 students. Six different math packs have been developed for each grade level and contain several activities for parents and children to work on together. Jackie Getgood, Spotsylvania's Mathematics Coordinator, received a $300 honorarium and trophy. Renee Wootteen of Brock Hill Elementary and Branch Wyatt of Lee Hill Elementary accepted the trophy on behalf of Ms. Getgood at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. The program, developed under the leadership of Ms. Getgood, focuses on providing parents with materials and lessons to do at home. Teachers provide training to help parents better understand how to work with their children to improve SOL scores. Miller Elementary School for Innovation in Lynchburg was honored by the Virginia Math and Science Coalition for its "On the Road Coal Show." Amy Dawson Lee received a trophy and a $300 honorarium at the Coalition board meeting held in Richmond on September 19. Seven other programs were honored as well. Ms. Dawson developed a program where students explore the role of coal in Virginia's economy from mining and geology to energy and electricity, to ecology and reclamation.
